The largest church of Kasos stands on the ruins of an older temple, on a coast that was once the main settlement of the island.
Panagia tou Emporio is the largest church of Kasos. It is built on the ruins of an older Christian church, of which only some columns and the baptistery survive. Its feast day is on September 8th.
A place with a long religious tradition
The choice of the spot is not accidental. During the Roman and early Christian periods, the main settlement of the island had shifted precisely to this coastal area, where archaeologists have identified the ruins of two early Christian basilicas. Emporios also served as the ancient port of Kasos, before Fry took over this role.
