Traditional mill of Agios Dimitrios

In Arvanitochori, where the local dialect "cuts" even the consonants of names, is the Aletourgio of Agios Dimitrios — a space created not by any organization, but by the residents themselves, who each offered a piece of the island's old rural life so that it would not be lost.

In the village of Arvanitochori is the traditional oil mill of Agios Dimitrios — or, as the locals call it in the local dialect where the delta is often not pronounced, of «Ai Dimitriou» or «Aimitriou». This is a space dedicated to the traditional, utilitarian objects that the island has used for generations, with the oil mill dominating the entrance, next to a variety of tools that farmers and livestock breeders used daily in their work.

What makes the Aletourgio special is not only its content, but also the way it was created: it is not an official museum institution, but a collective effort of the residents of Arvanitohori themselves, who personally donated old objects from their homes and fields in order to collect and preserve the memory of the island’s rural life. This element of community participation gives the Aletourgio a deeply authentic character — each object has its own little story and a family behind it.

In the neighborhood of Agios Dimitrios

The Aletourgio is located very close to the church of Agios Dimitrios, which dominates the center of Arvanitochori. The church began construction in 1864 and was completed in the early 20th century, with a pebbled floor and an imposing, towering bell tower. On October 26, the feast day of the Saint, the village is filled with a festival — an opportunity that many visitors take advantage of to combine the celebration with a walk to the adjacent Aletourgio and the village’s Folklore Museum, thus seeing, in a single day, both the religious and the agricultural side of Arvanitochori’s tradition.
