The Six Churches of the Virgin Mary

Τα Έξι Εκκλησάκια της Παναγιάς, έξι συνεχόμενα παρεκκλήσια με κεραμιδένιες στέγες

Six small Byzantine churches, built next to each other — and a tradition that says they were erected to drive away six fairies.

In the village of Panagia, next to the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, there is a rare complex of six small Byzantine churches built next to each other: Saint Nicholas, Saint John, Saint Barbara, the Beheading of the Holy Forerunner, Great Anthony and Saint Charalambos.

The tradition of the six fairies

According to local tradition, the six churches were built to drive away six fairies who were tormenting the villagers. The complex has been officially declared a historical monument — a recognition that confirms that it is not a local curiosity but a genuine part of the island's cultural heritage. Near the Six Churches are also the ruins of the Venetian castle of Kasos, which has not survived.
